A New Cabinet Position?

An update on a hot-topic related to our endeavors:

About two months ago, the now-famous hero for anti-industrial food, Michael Pollan, wrote a feature article in the New York Times Sunday Magazine. The article was a letter to the President-elect-to-be (elections hadn't happened yet) connecting food and agriculture issues to the other ones about which politicians care more openly (health and obesity, dependence on non-renewable energy, jobs, etc.) and calling for a more radical change in policy through appointment of a different type of person for Secretary of Agriculture.
This article provoked the response of many suggestions that Michael Pollan fill the post, but he has said he's not interested. Now that Obama has been elected, Pollan's article has also gotten a lot of people fired up about showing the President-elect that we care. See this brief article for details. In addition to the New York Times and the famous people who have shown their support for this campaign, Slow Food USA has featured info on the proposed alternative candidates and a link to the petition by Food Democracy Now!.

Yesterday, NYT columnist Nicholas Kristoff suggested that the position be changed to Secretary of Food in order to address our problems more directly.

Take a look through this coverage if you're interested and sign the petition if you think it's a good idea.

And have a warm and peaceful holiday with your loved ones!
